By Merry Wiesner-Hanks

Yale University Press
ISBN: 978-0-300-26823-2

From queens like Elizabeth I to mystics such as Teresa of Ávila, women held pivotal roles in the religious struggles that shaped Christianity during the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period. This book examines the Reformation and Counter Reformation through several leading female figures, both within and outside of Europe.

Excerpt:

It tells the story of women and religious change from the late fifteenth through the eighteenth century, taking in the full sweep of religious reform during this era when Western Christianity splintered and spread around the world. It includes the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Reformation, the movement to reform and strengthen the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant challenge that began in the 1540s. That is why “Reformations” is plural in the title. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw dynamic religious transformations that built on the Reformations, and these are here as well.

Who is this book for?

This book covers a lot of ground, dealing with a time when Christianity was both spreading globally but also finding itself torn apart by disputes over religious dogma. Those interested in the Reformation and Counter Reformation will find much here, as will those wanting to know more about women’s history.

“Wiesner-Hanks’ Women and the Reformations is a meticulously researched and compelling examination that broadens our understanding of the Reformation by placing women as active agents rather than peripheral figures. Her global approach, with a focus on lesser-known figures from diverse regions, enriches the narrative beyond the typical Eurocentric scope.” ~ review by Luciano Anastasi on Academia.edu
