New Online Course on the Battle of Hastings

Starting this September, you can take an online course about the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest. This self-paced course aims to give you the resources you need to better understand the famous medieval battle.

The course in being taught by Peter Konieczny, editor of Medievalists.net and formerly editor of Medieval Warfare magazine. This will be more like learning from a librarian than instructor, as Peter aims to explain the primary and secondary sources related to the events of 1066, to allow you to begin your research in the area.

The course is divided into five modules, each of which comes with a video presentation and a bibliography.

1. The Background to the Conquest – This module details the situation in Normandy and England in the 1050s and 1060s, along with the major leaders of this period.

2. The Chroniclers – How do we know about this historic event? This module contains information describing the various written sources related to the Norman Conquest.

3. The Bayeux Tapestry – Learn what we know about the iconic artistic depiction of the Battle of Hastings, along with new research on it.

4. The Prelude to Hastings – This module details the important books and articles related to King Harold II’s rule, the Norwegian Invasion and battles in northern England, and William’s crossing of the English Channel.

5. The Battle of Hastings – Learn which are the important books and articles related to the battle itself, including where it was fought and why the Normans won it.

There will be few other downloadable items in the course, which is run through Thinkific. It will be released on September 1st, but you can sign up early at a special price of $29.95 US (it will go up to $39.95 after its release). Click here to sign up!
