Praise for the Republic of Venice

By Poggius Bracciolini
Translated by D.P. Curtin

Dalcassian Publishing Company
ISBN: 978-8-8692-4143-6

A short work from the Renaissance scholar Poggio Bracciolini about why Venice was so great. Coming in Latin and an English translation, this text comes off as extreme flattery, but also offers insights into what Venetians and Italians were proud of.

Excerpt:

What shall I say of the most beautiful houses, the magnificent palaces, the temples built at great expense, the streets and the public places, and the city filled with various artists? Why should I review the modesty of the young, the authority of the old, the gravity of men, the dignity of the senate, which seems to be most truly evident from kings, as Cineas once said of the Romans? Why should all citizens, who bear a certain dignity before themselves, be dressed in fine clothing? What colorful and clean furniture, in the decoration of which they spend the most care? Add to this the fact that the whole city is accessible both by roads and canals, which is a great and no small advantage.
